ACTIVITY 2 El Popol Vuh

Lesson Objective
  1. Students will analyze and interpret the book illustrations by Luis Garay.
  2. Students will read three chapters of the Popol Vuj:Libro Sagrado de Los Mayas (Version Victor Montejo) in Spanish.
  3. Students will explain the religious importance of the ballgame in Mesoamerica.

Introduction
Introduce the Popol Vuh by showing the Popol Vuj:Libro Sagrado de Los Mayas book cover illustration by Luis Garay (Victor Montejo version of the Popol Vuh).(Popol Vuh Illustration)
  • Discuss the illustration; the people, clothing, and setting. What does Versión Víctor Montejo mean? Why is the Popol Vuh sometimes written Popol Vuj, Popol Wuj, Popol Wu'uj?
  • Brainstorm the meaning of the title Popol Vuj: Libro Sagrado de Los Mayas.
  • Use several of the illustrations from Popol Vuj: Libro Sagrado de Los Mayas to give an overview of the Popol Vuh before students begin reading Los Animales Mensajeros, El viaje a Xib'alb'a and Las Pruebas de Xib'alb'a. Illustrate The Creation, the Hero Twins, their birth and how they began to play ball as background information.

Assignment #1
Homework: Read Los Animales Mensajeros pp. 44-47 Popol Vuj- Los Mensajeros 44-47.doc and answer the comprehension questions ( Assignment 1).
Spanish Grammar: Write a synopsis of the verb tragar.
In Class: check for reading comprehension and read aloud.
Class Discussion:
  • Why do the twins have to go to Xib'alb'a? Explore the images p. 46 (PV_Illustration_pg._46_Los_Animales_Mensajeros.jpg)
  • Why does this make the grandmother unhappy?
  • Explain why toads have big mouths according to the Popol Vuj.
  • Find at least 3 examples of the subjunctive mood and explain why the subjunctive is used.

Assignment #2
Homework: Read El Viaje a Xib'alb'a pp. 47-51 Popol Vuj-El Viaje a Xib'alb'a pg 47-51.doc and prepare the discussion questions. (Assignment 2)
In Class: check for reading comprehension and read passages aloud
Class discussion:
Spanish Grammar: Write a synopsis of the verb vencer.
Review the use of the preterite and imperfect tenses and commands.

Assignment #3
Homework: Read Las Pruebas de Xib'alb'a pp. 51-56 Popol Vuj-Las Pruebas de Xib'alb'a pg.51-56.docx.
Take notes on each challenge test and how the twins outsmart the lords of Xib’alb’a.
In Class Discussion: Examine the illustrations on pp. 52-53 and relate them to the story. (PV_Illustration_pages_14-15.jpg) These illustrations can be also be used as an assessment tool.
Spanish Grammar: Write a synopsis of the verb colgar
Review the use of commands and pronouns on p. 54.

Conclusion: Class Discussion
Compare the Popol Vuh to other religious books, myths or legends.
Discuss the ballgame as a pan-Mesoamerican phenomena.

Enrichment Activity
Show students a copy of the Popol Vuh written in Quiche Edmonson Popol Vuh.
